An exhibition of paintings “The science and art of water – water seen through the eyes of Jordanian children” – Al-Hussein Cultural Center, Amman, Jordan

Under the Patronage of H.E. Dr Mohammed Thneibat, Minister of Education of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the JRC is participating in the inauguration of the exhibition on the Science and Art of Water in Jordan on 18 February 2016.

Children at different schools, including numerous pupils that are victims of the Syrian refugee crisis, have been asked to consider the water problems facing their region and to depict their feelings on them through drawings. Water has always been an element of great importance in the worlds of both science and art. These drawings, which will be included in the forthcoming Pan-European Atlas of Urban Water Management of the European Commission, form the basis of this exhibition and are accompanied by the work of the Polish artist Natalia Glowacka who, as both a scientist and professional artist, epitomises the bridge between technology and one’s imagination, between the social reality and cultural expression which the school pupils have been encouraged to describe.

”Science and Art. From a superficial point of view, they seem to be two completely separated spheres, from my very personal point of view, the similarities between them work clearly outweigh their trivial stereotypes – or in simple terms, it is difficult to distinguish where one stops and the other one starts. Both areas consist from the process of creation and both of them are dedicated to discover the deep and complex thinking in each one of us to answer the big question: what is true? Water is a topic which as no other creates a bridge between science and art.

Science and art are responsible for the variety of ways of asking questions. Notwithstanding, both search for a deep and often far-reaching responses and ultimately a truth. Scientists and artists have a tendency to approach the issues and problems with a similar openness and acuteness, with such a supplementary thinking there is a great promising potential with the outcome of hardly surprising results.

We need to remember that scientists and artists collaborated together in the decades and each solution, which we are obligated to find needs to be discovered with a creative approach. I have always connected science and art, since the both spheres were the most important media to create the answers on my questions and to underline my life values.

Since I have started my studies at University in Biotechnology and Art, I have waited for this day to come, to combine it together to reach the higher aim. Connection of art and science is still unconventional, but was created by the nature, which makes them mutual partners.”
